Ulcerative Colitis

In 2018, 270,000 Canadians were living with ulcerative colitis (UC).1

Ulcerative colitis is one form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is localized in nature. Typically, the disease affects the colon (large intestine) including the rectum and anus, and only invades (inflames) the inner lining of bowel tissue. It almost always starts at the rectum, extending upwards in a continuous manner through the colon.2 Colitis can impact people of any age or gender, although the usual onset occurs between the ages of 15 and 45, equally affecting men and women.2

Impact on daily life

Coping with the physical symptoms of UC can be very challenging emotionally.3

For those with IBD, there are many facets of the disease that can create added stress including a loss of control over bowel habits, fatigue, body image, and social isolation.3 It is estimated that 20.5% of IBD patients have an anxiety disorder.4

Estimates for depression disorders in people with IBD was 15.2% while the percentage was higher at 21.6% for people who reported experiencing symptoms of depression.4 In addition, feelings of stress can increase IBD symptoms and can cause flare-ups.5

These types of feelings are common for those living with IBD.
There are various strategies and coping mechanisms that IBD patients, including those with UC,  can utilize to make their day to day lives easier.4 Being prepared for symptoms and side effects is important; knowing trigger foods, being cognizant of where restrooms are located when visiting new places, always carrying extra clothing and toilet accessories in case bathroom are not fully stocked, and planning travel itineraries in advance keeping all of these items in mind.6

Collaboration with a healthcare provider is an important step in the day to day life of someone living with UC. Together, they can help identify strategies and problem solving techniques to help identify triggers and barriers to a high quality life and help foster decision making skills that will help in various situations.6

Our ongoing commitment

Pfizer Canada is committed to supporting Canadians living with UC. In collaboration with the broader inflammatory bowel disease community, over the years we have developed tools and initiatives to connect, inspire, educate and empower those diagnosed with UC to live their best lives:

  • Since 2019, Pfizer has been engaging with a community of UC advocates to form the Imagine UC network, helping to facilitate meaningful connections and spark thoughtful conversations on how to better support Canadians living with the condition.

  • We have also helped develop tools to facilitate more candid and open discussions between those living with UC and their physicians, fostering stronger relationships that are critical to quality care.

  • Over the years, we have supported numerous educational advocacy and fundraising efforts, including campaigns by Crohn’s and Colitis CanadaGastrointestinal Society, and Canadian Digestive Health Foundation.

For patients with UC, it is crucial to have timely and affordable access to the medicines they are prescribed. Pfizer recognizes the challenges many governments and payers face with regard to healthcare system sustainability.  With the goal of making personalized support easily accessible, Pfizer offers Patient Support Programs, serving as a crucial resource for individuals seeking more information.
